Gut Love

"Health begins in the gut", "The gut is the seat of health" are very popular quotes coming from any holistic health practitioner and health website and for good reason....

Did you know?

The human gut contains 10 times more bacteria than all the human cells in the entire body. When your gut is full of beneficial bacteria you experience normal gastrointestinal function, your metabolism is regulated, you are far less likely to get infections or any illness for that matter, and its high on the cards you are a happy, well-balanced individual who can deal with life's highs and lows.

Eating (and drinking) a diet rich in wholefoods particularly fresh vegetables feeds good gut bacteria and helps them—and consequently us—thrive.

The delicious smoothie below will certainly help feed those helpful bacteria. Its made up of ingredients with great digestive benefits:

Pineapple contains bromelain (If you look at any digestive enzyme supplement this is usually one of the top ingredients) The core of the pineapple has a group of enzymes, which provide the key health benefits found in bromelain specifically aiding with digestion of all proteins.

Lemon stimulates secretion of digestive juices so food we eat is absorbed better into our system. Remember: We are what we absorb from the food we eat. A perfect diet is going to waste in some respects if your digestive function is comprised. Lemons are alkalizing and anti inflammatory once ingested.

Cucumbers are rich in water and fiber; essential elements needed for healthy digestion. Water and fibre are effective in helping the body get rid of toxins from the digestive system.

Ginger is traditionally used to aid digestion by increasing digestive juices, which help alleviate indigestion and other symptoms like gas and bloating.

Mint is another digestive aid, soothing the stomach if there is inflammation. The smell of mint stimulates saliva production and digestive enzymes, helping facilitate digestion.

Spirulina benefits include promoting the growth of healthy bacteria in the intestines, which inhibits candida and non-beneficial bacteria from thriving. Also, spirulina has immune-strengthening properties which help the body eliminate candida.
